Do I Need Breast Reduction Surgery To Eliminate Back Pain?
Bloomingdale Chiropractic Physician develops treatment plan for women to help them live pain-free and prevent dangerous breast reduction surgery.
Bloomingdale, IL – March 5, 2010 – Thousands of women suffer with upper back pain as a direct result of their large cup size. Headaches, muscle pain and even tingling in the arms is a common result of large breast size, whether it’s after adding breast implants or if it’s just their natural size. Many of these women simply suffer, figuring there’s nothing they can do. Others save their money up for surgical breast reduction procedures which carry their own risk. Dr. Erin Ducat, a board-eligible sports chiropractic physician, has developed a drugless, non-surgical treatment plan designed to target the specific needs of larger-breasted women.
“The most common cause of back pain for women who are larger in the anterior chest is a forward curving of the thoracic spine, called kyphosis, which creates muscle spasm and joint inflammation along the delicate tissues in the area,” explains Dr. Ducat. “After this pressure continues for a few months, chronic muscle knots, joint degeneration and other symptoms such as headaches and tingling in the hands can start to develop. The longer the curvature persists, the greater the symptoms become and the more difficult it is to resolve the problem.”
Traditional chiropractic manipulation addressed part of the issue for these women by loosening restrictions in the joints of the thoracic spine, but didn’t address the additional symptoms of muscle spasm and weakness. “Women that were adjusted by their chiropractors for their back pain felt great for a few days, but the pain would always return,” said Dr. Ducat. “That prompted me to use my background in sports and rehabilitation to take a look at the muscular structure in the area and help them find a more permanent solution.”
It turns out that the key for treating the pain caused by larger breasts started with pinpointing the areas of the upper back and chest that were tight, tender, weak and deconditioned. After applying chiropractic manipulation to loosen the joints and decrease the patient’s pain, Dr. Ducat stretched the tight muscles across the chest and taught the patient how to strengthen the weakened muscle across their mid-back, using Kinesiotape technology (as seen in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games) to speed along the healing process. This specific treatment protocol gave patients long-term relief from the forward curvature caused by the increased breast size.
“It’s important that women understand that they do not have to suffer with pain because of their breast size,” said Dr. Ducat. “There are economical and effective treatments available that can help them return to an active, pain-free lifestyle without going under the knife.”
