Silly Stretches That Don’t Work: The Butterfly Stretch

Over the next few months, I am going to present a series of Silly Stretches and Silly Exercises that you will never catch me doing.  Some of them just plain old don’t work and others have a high injury risk to low benefit ratio.  For each Silly Stretch or Exercise, I’ll give you a much better alternative so you can work out like a professional!

Many people have been doing the butterfly stretch since childhood.  You’ll see it as a warm up for youth sports, in yoga classes and people do it before they run too.  Have you ever noticed that your groin or inner thigh became more flexible after this stretch?  Probably not!  It really doesn’t work too well.  Most of the time, you’ll end up stretching your back (which might give you back pain) and will look silly in the process.

When stretching, you want to pick a position that loads the body area you are stretching and helps keep your back/torso in a neutral position.  In today’s video, I demonstrate the butterfly stretch and explain why it doesn’t work.  You will then learn how to do the Frog stretch, which is much more effective for opening up the groin and inner thigh.

If you still have hip, inner thigh or groin tightness after trying the Frog stretch, there might be something else going on that need professional help.  If I can assist, call us at 224-653-8094 to schedule your appointment.
